girl in the pool

for this project i first got the video and put it into logic normally i would put it into priemer however logic is best for audio editing so i decided to edit it in there which did make it easier

after i did this i placed a soundscape for the backround sound i managed to find an outside one then after i put this into logic i put small amount of reverb to give it the pool echoing sound

after this i put the water effects in it took a very long time editing and getting them in the right place do it sounds good if i was to do this project again i would recored my own sounds as then i could be watching the video at the same time so it would all be in time with everything and would save me a lot of time

next was the muic that went over the top this was very intresting to do as everytime the camara angle changed i had to change the volume to suit this howevert it was ticky to do but gave the clip a very good effect as it felt like the camara was further away from the radio when zoomed out.

This is my skills audit and i will do another one at the end of the project to see how far i had developed through the project

Action plan:

Week 1:In the first week i will write my proposal and complete my skill audit this is very important because i will be able to see how i have improved through out the project so hit makes the task more important

Week 2: For the second week i will be creating my drum kit which i will be making out of tins and things i can find like that and also in this week i will try to get a drum patten that i can play guitar over the top

Week 3: This week i will recored my drums that i have made doing this i will need to book studio time if i wish to recored in the studio and i will also need to learn which microphones i will need to use and where to put them.

Week 4: This week i will have written the guitar solo that with sit on top of the drum track and will make it more interesting i will have to book more studio time how ever it won’t need to be as long in there as it will be a lot more simple also i will need to learn how to get the tone on my guitar that i want for this i could watch videos or experiment for myself

Week 5: This week i will be mixing my song for this i will have to book a room just so i can play it out loud because if i mix with head phones on it will not sound good and won’t sound like it did also this week i will do my skills audit again to see how i have developed through this project

Week 6: This week i will just over look everything and make sure its all in order

Week 2-

For my guitar i will use a NM 184 for my guitar playing af i believe it will be best suited as it is very all rounded and “It captures virtually any instrument with amazing complexity and depth of sound.Newman (2016)-“Newman site. of i believe i will get the best sound from this through the amp the amp ill use is”.

The guitar i will use is an epiphany casino coupe this carries a very sharp clean sound through the bridge pick up and i may add slight distortion as it may make it more interesting guitar sound.

For the drum sound i may use a lot smaller version of an x and y technique as there won’t be much area to cover but i may need more than just one microphone over so i can get an even sound for my home made kit which i will make before the 3rd week

i will create the guitar solo beforee the second week as well as I’m in the studio on Tuesday in the 3rd Week

for my drum kit i will use a  Neumann km184 and i will prop it over the top using a microphone stand this means every thing i play will be even and nothing will be louder than anything else.

Also in the week i managed to write the guitar solo:

For this i used a slight chorus effect and used a way pedal to give it this sound i will build the drum beat sound around this and may use harsher drum sounds to compliment the guitar solo over the top. I also used a way pedal as it gives it a psychedelic 60s sound

Reflection:

this week i had written the guitar solo and found out which sort of sound i wanted into the guitar part so next week ill work out how to get the drum sound to complement that of the guitar so next week i need to

-Research how to create my drum sound
-what microphone i’ll use
-how i’ll mix my sounds

Week 3

i have been researching how other people have made drum kits and what items they used i put this one as the the main objects that he is using iu will be able to make and recreate that sound i was and i was also looking at the way he recorded it and he had a microphone down by his foot which i will do and from i can see just one overhead microphone recording it all when i do it i may have just one as well and my kit won’t be very big so i can just use one and get an even sound through the whole kit

i will also put the sound onto logic so i can edit them and add effects afterwards and can make it sound exactly like i what it to and if i want to rearrange it then and mix it once in logic.

for microphones I will be using an SM58 as it “makes most vocalists sound great by adding just the right amount of bass & treble, & dropping out just a hint of mid range.”- Ollie Mason explains (2018) which would give me the best sound to create my drum sound then will put into logic so I can EQ the sounds so I can get them to fit the track.

The sounds i will be recording are a shaker, clap, food hitting the floor and the drop of a bottle lid to give it a high end sound in there i believe this will be fairly easy to recored as there is nothing to difficult once I’ve recorded that i can put everything into logic and rearrange in it and create my own percussion sound.

relection

I focused well on the creation of making a drum kit and after doing this reasearch i am doubting weather it will be the most effective way of creating a preccusion sound so i will experiment with more

Week 4

after week 3 i have seen how difficult and impractical it would be to create a drum kit and recored it so I have decided i will still use the idea but i will recored all the different sounds the put into logic and created a beat in logic with all the sounds. This means i will recored this sounds with one beat or a small sequence so when i come to edit it it will make it easier.

Screen Shot 2019-02-11 at 09.49.13.pngI created a very quick example on how i want my sound to sound like and how i want it to sound as i can now try to get this sound from my drums beat and when i recored the guitar sound i can mainly just use this as an example to base my track once i recored it and i plan to make my track about 1.5 mins as I’m not putting vocals into it it could start to get dull if it goes on longer than that.

I feel making a rough idea on logic was a very good idea as it didn’t take long and gives me more of a sense of direction with where I want my project to go and sound like.

Week 5

This week i will be in the studio to create my track.

during being in the studio i came up with this riff which i will put as the main part of my track however it doesn’t go along with the plan i had for the track but i will experiment with it to see how it turns out while i created this i put in a very standard kit so i could develop they guitar part

once i had sorted the guitar part i started to think of a guitar solo which i would use an a minor scale to go with the riff I will also recored this over thechorus so instred of vocals over the chorus I can have a st solo over the top

once i had recorded that i took the drums out and got a sm58 microphone and started to try to get a drum beat that would fit the one i had already for this i got the simple beat from hitting the chair and recording it then i hit the table to give the higher notes and put in a shaker while listening to the tract so i is all in time. also I will mix the song in the 6th week however I can only do this once I have recorded the vocals.

at the end of this week i was at tthis stage:Screen Shot 2019-03-04 at 10.26.05.pngwith the whole instramental side of it if i have enoughtime during week 6 i will get jack in to recored vocals if not i will have to keep it as just the instramental. however me and jack hawkins have written lyrics to and will recored  at some point.

week 6

this week i will try to get the vocals completed if there isn’t enough time as it is the final week I will attempt to replace it with a guitar part to show the melody also this week I will do an evaluation and a skills audit

Screen Shot 2019-03-04 at 09.44.08.png

from this you can see how along the project my logic skills have improved since the start of the project this is as i was importing

evaluation

in my overall evaluation I will be looking at where I went wrong in my project what changed the project and what went well so I understand what went well so I can replicate it.

throughout the project I had many ideas of how I wanted the project to turn out the original one was the sympathy for the devil idea where I wanted to recreate o bongo sound with a homemade drum kit I put a lot of work into this idea and for the majority though this is what I would do however when ego into the studio I came up with this riff on guitar by using the very basic drum beat on logic after I had done this I came up with the chords and put it together and created the rough sound of how I wanted it. so once I had got into the studio my plans and ideas began to develop and change this may of been a god thing in the fact I had more realistic ideas of what I could machine while in the studio also may of been bad as I had spent so much time researching ideas that were now less useful and I had put in a lot of research towards the original project

so for this I tried to use as much information that I had already found out so my microphone research was which I could still use and did later on while recording the precussion for my track i still used a sm58 which worked very well for recording the objects and gave very ballanced sound.

overall i was very happy how this project turned out i feel when i go into my fmp i should do more preperation at the begining so i dont waste my time reasearching something i wont follow up it paractically however i i was still able to use alot of that research

Proposal

Rationale-so far through the course i have learnt how to recored and create a good sound using the desk in the studio and how to set the room up which will really benefit me throughout this project as i will need to be in there to recored my instrument in the main studio. also i have learned to use logic pro premier and pro tools which had never used before this will also really help me as if i want to change the sound of any instrument once recored i will be able to put it in to logic to alter the sound

My concept for my project is to create a sound like the drum sound in sympathy for the devil and i want to use that so structure so over the top of the drum beats i will want a overdriven guitar solo over top. for the drum (bongo) sound i will create my own drum kit using items like tins and water bottles to create the deep echoing sound a bass drum. throughout the project i will need to research how the drums were recorded and how they were played so i can get mine as close to that sound and also i will need to research how to get the correct tone on my guitar that i want also i will need to create my own drum patten so once i have my kit made i will need to learn a new drum patten and then write a guitar solo around that with that speed in mind i will hope to have my drum sound recored by the end of the 3rd week and the guitar solo by the 4th which means then i have a maximum

at the end of every week i will have a piece of reflection so i can improve on my reflection and its not wasted but not acting on it so it will be worth me doing my research and this will make my project better if I’m aware on what needs work on my project

week 1:in the first week i will write my proposal and complete my skill audit this is very important because i will be able to see how i have improved through out the project so hit makes the task more important

week 2: for the second week i will be creating my drum kit which i will be making out of tins and things i can find like that and also in this week i will try to get a drum patten that i can play guitar over the top

week 3: this week i will recored my drums that i have made doing this i will need to book studio time if i wish to recored in the studio and i will also need to learn which microphones i will need to use and where to put them.

week 4: this week i will have written the guitar solo that with sit on top of the drum track and will make it more interesting i will have to book more studio time how ever it won’t need to be as long in there as it will be a lot more simple also i will need to learn how to get the tone on my guitar that i want for this i could watch videos or experiment for myself

week 5: this week i will be mixing my song for this i will have to book a room just so i can play it out loud because if i mix with head phones on it will not sound good and won’t sound like it did also this week i will do my skills audit again to see how i have developed through this project

week 6: this week i will just over look everything and make sure its all in order

ideas brainstorm

what do you want to achieve in this project?-

from this project i will create a rhythm with house hold objects e.g. a coffee pot to create a sound and over that i will try to place an electric guitar solo over the top of it to provide a different sound. i might be able to put vocals into it depends how much time i have left at the end of the project

choose one idea:

i will try to get some sort of bass drum or something like that and put a solo guitar over the top as it will provide a more chilled out sound onto a harsh sounding drum which i could use a empty water bottle. this will give a very deep sound then over that i could add more precision over it to change the sound of it and make it more complex

i have some precision instruments which could use overt the rhythm part of it and have some drum sticks so i could experiment with them to see if i will have to look and see if there is anything that i like the sound of i can make and recorded as a precision instrument.

The influences to my piece are gonna be sympathy for the devil by the rolling stones especially with the 20 seconds i feel like i could get a sound like this with household objects very successfully and the guitar part 2:49 to 3:23 that part with the precision is my main aim to create.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klE91qHGrE

this is what I’m going to try to create my drum track around

I have done a skills audit to see where i am at the beginning of the project so at the end i can compare and see how far i will of progressed through out the whole project the main areas i would like to concentrate on this project are sound manipulation and problem solving through out as that will be most important for this project.

glyn johns technique

the glen johns technique is a method for recording drums which involves a combination of 4 stero microphones which is seen as a minimalistic about of microphones the first mic is a mono overhead which from this you would want a balanced sound from the snare toms and cymbals from one mic, the second mic goes to the right of the floor tom which is individual as they normally go over head. place the kick mic inside the drum or just outside it or with the snare place a few inches away from the rim angled across the snare after you’ve done this you can adjust it to create a balanced sound this is one of the most effective ways to record drums

often to recored with a condenser microphone however you can use a dynamic and after you decide which type of microphone to use you have to try to get the right distance from the guitar to the so its loud enough but not so loud it distorts you can also record record mono which is quick and easy to set up however recording stero adds more depth to the recording but introduces phasing issues.

to record electric guitar you should use a dynamic microphone and prop it up near the amplifier which should be close tho the amplifier again not so it distorts so you will need to find the right spot however you will need to know what amplifier you have because if it has two speakers you will have to change the way you record it to get the best sound

x and y technique for recording drums the x and y technique is defiantly one of the easiest ways to record drums you have to put the microphones diagonal across the bass drum and the snare once this is done place the over heads 5 foot up andas close as you can without them touching

practical research

Setting up the glen johns techinque:we send into the studio got two…….microphones and placed them one just one just above the snare but what was very important was the second mono overhead was places the equal distance away from the snare as the other microphones so you will get a balanced sound
